Our client — a leading figure in professional football — recognized the need for a more efficient and accurate approach to player scouting. Traditional methods, heavily reliant on manual analysis by scouting teams, were no longer sufficient to meet the demands of modern football.

In the early 2000s, the Boston Red Sox revolutionized baseball scouting with advanced analytics to win a World Series, but similar innovations were non-existent in football due to its complexity and technological hurdles. The client sought a solution that could automate the scouting process, integrate various data sources, and provide comprehensive player comparisons.

The client’s challenge was to overcome the limitations of existing football scouting systems. While some platforms offered partial automation, none provided the comprehensive integration needed for thorough player evaluation. The client required a solution that could gather and analyze vast amounts of player data, and then predict a player’s future value and fit within a team based on that data.

We developed a scalable data lake architecture that integrates multiple data sources, providing a unified platform for comprehensive player analysis. The platform collects detailed performance metrics, including physical attributes, technical skills, tactical understanding, and psychological traits.

Using match stats and other data, our solution allows for in-depth player analysis, enabling features such as heat maps and player comparisons. The detailed match stats provide insight into a player’s strengths, weaknesses, and contributions in specific games.

Self-service reporting is made possible through Microsoft Power BI, allowing users to generate their own reports and make data-driven decisions without needing extensive technical knowledge. This capability empowers clubs, agents, and analysts to evaluate players more efficiently and effectively.

The solution was implemented using a robust data architecture that combined various data sources through APIs, SFTP servers, web scraping, and open databases. This architecture supports the collection and analysis of detailed player data, enabling users to dive deep into performance metrics and make informed decisions.

Our platform also includes tools for non-data analysts, such as Power BI and Excel integrations, ensuring that all stakeholders can easily access and use the data. The implementation process was designed to be seamless, reducing the time and resources required for player scouting and enabling the client to focus on evaluating top candidates.
